An Exhibitor’s Perspective:
SaskPower’s IBEW chapter kindly invited Brews Supply to participate in their Lineman’s Rodeo a number of years ago. It has grown into a very enjoyable day filled with events that are the essence of the electric utility lineman’s work. It is a wonderful to watch journeymen technician and apprentices going through the list of events in front of an audience of spouse, children, other family members and the public.
A lineman’s job is varied, requiring training, experience and commitment. Safety first is a requirement in the day’s events and on the job.
I am reminded of the story of two journeymen looking at a pole in a slough with a broken wood cross arm. Being very experienced, they were scheduling the job in February when the water was harder...
For exhibitors like Brews Supply, this is an opportunity to see and appreciate little life events - like the problem of a visiting journeyman. He drove through the night to arrive in Saskatoon in time for the rodeo. When he opened his equipment bag he realized he forgot his safety boots. Without boots he couldn’t climb poles safely and therefore wouldn’t be allowed to compete. Imagine a very excited lineman asking fellow contestants if he could borrow a pair of boots but not having any luck. Fortunately, there were a couple of linemen mannequins mounted on the poles at the entrance to the main assembly hall. Their boots were fastened with screws to the poles. Now he had to find a Robertson screwdriver. He canvassed all the official hosts for a ‘Robbie.” Every competitor has big sports bags filled with personal equipment but no one had a screwdriver. He wisely understood that if you need equipment you can always go to an exhibiting supplier and satisfy your need.
The attached collage of images have been put together, so you can see the effort and support put into the event by SaskPower and the guys work on the lines.
This is an event that is worth attending, competing in and supporting with plans to grow into a touring event across Canada. Don't miss the opportunity to enter your own team next year to represent your organization!
